Shooting Near Howard Saturday; New Nats Manager: Morning Links

Must-reads from around Washington

Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated that two people had been killed in a shooting Saturday at the Caribbean Festival. Only one person died as a result of that shooting. We apologize for the error.

Six Shot Near Howard University Saturday: The Caribbean Festival ended in violence on Saturday when a gang-related shooting near Howard University killed one person and injured several others. WJLA reports that police believe that one of the wounded men, a well-known gang member, was the intended target. The slain man has been identified as 43-year-old Robert Foster Jr. Scott McCabe at the Washington Examiner reports that the shooting is the result of warring gangs, which are younger and more tech savvy than they've been in the past.

DC Clinics Offer Free HIV Testing:
The Whitman-Walker clinic is offering free HIV testing in several locations today for National HIV Testing Day. The clinic is stepping up its efforts from recent years after the DC Department of Health released a report in the last two weeks that indicates the city has infection rates at epidemic proportions.

Nats May Get New Manager:
After Jim Riggleman's unexpected resignation as manager of the Washington Nationals on Friday, the Washington Post reports that Davey Johnson, who is currently a Nats senior advisor, will become the team's next manager.

Second Baby Dolphin Dies at National Harbor Aquarium: A dolphin calf born in April at the National Aquarium in Baltimore died on Saturday. The calf's sibling died on Thursday, and an autopsy is underway to determine the causes of death, though NBC4 reports that both in wild and in captivity, a third of dolphins won't survive their first year. UPDATE: Don't bother with that NBC4 link as it misidentifies the location as National Harbor, instead of the National Aquarium, in Baltimore, where this story actually takes place. Try this WBAL story instead.
