As proof that the “sh*t some group of people say” meme apparently still isn’t dead, the SocialStudiesDC video “Shit People in DC Say” went viral. (Or perhaps DC viral, like DC famous?) For better or worse, we’ll admit we’ve heard or uttered most of the phrases in the video—including the opening line, “What do you do?”, which, in our defense, is used by basically all DC professionals at one point or another. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite reactions to the video from local blogs.
“To be fair, the entire meme is based on stereotypes, so obviously the DC version won’t be able to capture all of the nuances and complexities of our demographic makeup. One line in particular stood out to me: ‘Wait, isn’t Anacostia, like, really dangerous?’ Perhaps the next video should just highlight common stereotypes held by people in DC.”
• We Love DC points out all the things the video missed:
“Why no curse for the Nationals? Is it because Living Social thinks nobody in DC cares about them? Good call on the Bullets reference.”
• Jenny Rogers at TBD quoted a commenter who was* unimpressed:
“Complaining about hipsters/white people who aren’t from here/people from the suburbs in DC? Congratulations publius02, UntouchableMonkey, et al. You’ve just added to the list of shit people in DC say.”
“It’s obviously a satire, but the whole thing feels a little too forced. Stylistically, the whole thing feels like a laundered version of one of those Portlandia sketches in which Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein rifle through all the quirky things they love about their adopted hometown.”
What did you think of the video? Seen other great reactions to it? Let us know in the comments.

Rounding Up Reactions to the “Shit People in DC Say” Video
DC finally got its own version of the neverending meme—but was it funny or just tired?
As proof that the “sh*t some group of people say” meme apparently still isn’t dead, the SocialStudiesDC video “Shit People in DC Say” went viral. (Or perhaps DC viral, like DC famous?) For better or worse, we’ll admit we’ve heard or uttered most of the phrases in the video—including the opening line, “What do you do?”, which, in our defense, is used by basically all DC professionals at one point or another. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite reactions to the video from local blogs.
• Glittarazzi treats the video as an explainer:
“There’s finally a viral video that we can send to our families back home to try to explain the bizarre lives we live in our nation’s capital.”
• DCentric’s Elahe Izadi takes the serious tack:
“To be fair, the entire meme is based on stereotypes, so obviously the DC version won’t be able to capture all of the nuances and complexities of our demographic makeup. One line in particular stood out to me: ‘Wait, isn’t Anacostia, like, really dangerous?’ Perhaps the next video should just highlight common stereotypes held by people in DC.”

• As is Benjamin Freed at DCist:
“It’s obviously a satire, but the whole thing feels a little too forced. Stylistically, the whole thing feels like a laundered version of one of those Portlandia sketches in which Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein rifle through all the quirky things they love about their adopted hometown.”
